1. Create your plan

Step 1. Choose your deck position
Think about which way you want your deck to face and where possible make the most of the sun. Would you like your deck to face east so you can enjoy the sunrise? Or would you rather it face west, to appreciate the sunset?

Step 2. Consider levels
How high would you like your deck to be? Elevated decks have steps or stairs leading down to the deck. Low level decks are the same level as your floor and can give you more entertaining space.

Step 3. Think about the style of your deck
We carry a comprehensive range of WPC decking, the right design and style can mean the difference between a deck that looks like a stuck on addition and one that’s a natural extension of your home.

Step 4. Make it legal
Be sure to check with your local council regarding any restrictions or safety requirements before you start any work.

Step 5. Draw up a rough plan
With careful consideration, you may not have to clear bushes, trees or plants any by avoiding drains, external pipes and plumbing, you will make the project simpler and easier to accomplish. Also ensure that you have the right tools and safety equipment for the project.
2. Measure and mark out your deck

When making your measurements, it’s important to take into account the height of your decking and joist. In our case, we measured 25mm down from under the sill to allow for the decking and added 90mm to allow for joists – a total 115mm. we then marked this at each end of the sill. We also measure from the ground to this point to establish the height measurement. We then run our string lines at this height around the perimeter of the area.

Then, refer to your plan to find out how far apart the stumps need to be. With BauMart decking, it is every 1000mm from the sill out to the edge of the deck. Then mark every 600mm and along the edge. Run string lines to create a grid, each intersecting point on the grid marks where your stumps need to go. Use marking spray paint to make out these positions on the ground.
3. Place the deck footings

Dig the holes for your stumps using the marks you made with string lines. The holes must be dug to depths according to your plans and permits. The sides of the holes must be straight and clean at the top. After your bearers are cut to size, place the bearer on the support post on a flat. Making sure the bearer is level, mark its height on the support post. Use the spirit level to make sure it’s still straight. Drill into the bearer in the central point above the hole you have made for each of the stumps. The hole in the bearer is for the threaded rod stump. Check the level after the bearer is secure to the stump. Then fill in your hole with concrete around the stumps up to the required height. You’ll need to leave the concrete around the stumps to harden overnight. Then use a claw hammer to remove all of the support posts on the bearers. Back-fill all of the holes with soil. Then you are ready to install the joists.

Dig the holes for your stumps to the required specifications, and fill the footings with concrete and ensure that your posts are stable. This will create a sturdy base for your deck. Tip: Use the spirit level to make sure everything is aligned.
4. Fix bearers and joists

Using the wall as a guide to keep the first joist straight, use the nail gun to secure the first joist at the end of the bearer near the wall. Use the first joist as your guide and measure and mark on the bearer 4500mm distance to the next joist go. Mark every bearer so your second joist will be lined up with the first joist. Use the nail gun to secure the second joist on each bearer, on both sides of the joist. When you’ve finished attaching the joists, measure the distance between them. Then cut pieces of timber to this length to fit between every second joist. This will provide your decking with extra support. Use the nail gun to secure the timber between every second joist. Your deck is now ready to be laid.
5. Lay the decking

Before you start cutting the decking, measure the width of the area to determine how many pieces of decking you need. To make sure all your pieces line up, run a string line from one side of the decking to the other as a guide. Start by installing the 4Baumart Stainless Steel SS304 Starter clip at the edge of the deck on the joists, then laying the first piece of decking hard up again the starter clip. Then using the BauMart Stainless steel SS304 fastener clip as a spacer. Install the BauMart Stainless steel SS304 fastener clip on every joist to fasten which deck. Lay the second piece of decking next to the first then secure the decking as before. Lay down the next piece of decking until you completed laying all of the decking.
